Choosing the Right Cage System

Cage systems maximize space and improve egg production efficiency. Here is how to choose between A-type and H-type cages.

A-Type Cages

**Structure:** Arranged in an A-frame (pyramid) shape.

**Advantages:**

  • Better ventilation (natural airflow)
  • Easier manure collection
  • Lower initial cost
  • Good for open-sided houses
  • **Disadvantages:**

  • Uses more floor space per bird
  • Lower bird density
  • **Best for:** Small to medium farms (100-500 birds)

    H-Type Cages

**Structure:** Stacked vertically with manure belts between tiers.

    **Advantages:**

  • Maximum bird density
  • Automated feeding and egg collection
  • Better for climate-controlled houses
  • Lower cost per bird housed
  • **Disadvantages:**

  • Higher initial investment
  • Requires mechanical ventilation
  • More complex maintenance
  • **Best for:** Commercial farms (500+ birds)

    Setup Requirements

    #### Space Planning

  • A-Type (96 birds): 2m × 1.5m floor space
  • H-Type (160 birds): 2.1m × 0.6m floor space
  • #### Supporting Equipment

  • Nipple drinker system
  • Feed trough or automatic feeder
  • Egg collection trays
  • Manure scraper or belt
  • Lighting system (16 hours light for layers)
  • Installation Tips

    1. Level the floor before installation

    2. Ensure adequate ventilation

    3. Install water system before placing birds

    4. Test all automated systems before stocking

    5. Allow 2-3 days for birds to adjust

    Conclusion

A-Type cages are ideal for beginners and small farms. H-Type cages are the choice for commercial operations focused on maximizing production per square metre.
